ABOUT THE GREEN BAY TREE (Courtesy of Amazon)
Bromfield creates a sophisticated and complex account of a family and its position in society. John Shane, a mysterious gentleman appears in a midwestern town and builds his estate--Cypress Hill--beyond the penetrating eyes of the townspeople who refer to it as Shane's Castle. After his death, his widow Julia, and daughters Lily and Irene, make no effort to quell the speculation of their neighbors. Steel mills eventually surround Shane's Castle and its inhabitants, serving only to enhance the appearance of the Shane clan's separateness. With his keen storytelling, Bromfield carefully unfolds the stories of a community of people and the Shane women with whom they are fascinated, preoccupied, and even obsessed.

ABOUT POSSESSION (Courtesy of GoodReads)
The story of Ellen Tolliver aka Lilli Barr the concert pianist. But, more than that, the story of the possessors and the possessed. Who is possessed by whom in what way and who does the possessing.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR (Courtesy of Wikipedia)
Louis Bromfield (1896 – 1956) was an American author and conservationist. A bestselling novelist in the 1920s, he reinvented himself as a farmer in the late 1930s and became one of the earliest proponents of sustainable and organic agriculture in the United States. He won the Pulitzer Prize, founded the experimental Malabar Farm near Mansfield, Ohio, and played an important role in the early environmental movement. His third novel, Early Autumn, a harsh portrait of his wife's Puritan New England background, won the 1927 Pulitzer Prize. “He is, of all the young American novelists, pre-eminently the best and most vital,” John Carter wrote that year in the New York Times.
