ABOUT GUS SAUNDERS (Courtesy of the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame)
One of the most familiar voices on Boston radio for more than 50 years and a particular favorite with the ladies, Gus is best remembered for pioneering food programming on the air. He began in broadcasting at WMEX while still a junior at Harvard University, then worked at WNAC for 23 years firsts as an announcer and then, in addition, as host of the groundbreaking morning food program “The Boston Kitchen.” In 1948, when WNAC launched Boston’s second TV station, Gus was the first voice on the air. He served as booth announcer and one of the station’s first weathermen. Years later, the renamed ”Yankee Kitchen” traveled with him to WCOP-FM, and then to WROL, where he worked for 22 years. The show included live broadcasts from the Parker House. Gus was also a food columnist for the Boston Herald-American and then the Boston Herald (1973-1990) and author of a series of WNAC Boston Kitchen cookbooks.
