My dad has collected inkwells for decades. I grew up with glass, brass and silver inkwells all around. Most inkwells are simple and elegant, designed for everyday use. But every now and then you find an extraordinary work of art, an inkwell designed to be a statement piece -- a grand work for a stately desk. When we found this inkwell, we knew we had just such a piece.

This bronze and silver inkwell depicts a farmer and his mule on their way to the market along a rugged road they have traveled together many times. The man tips his hat to us as he passes by. The mule bears her burden with slow dignity and grace. The craftsmanship and the details are gorgeous. Even the stump that opens to hold a pen -- a delightful touch. Upon further investigation we discovered that what we thought was a bronze piece has silver plating incorporated into the design.

The figure, the saddle, the inside rim and lid of the pen holder, and the inkwell/baskets are all silver or silver plate and the road appears to also be plated as well. A professional cleaning will undoubtedly reveal more of the artist's true intent. We aren't sure of the age or provenance, as their are no markings, but based on the craftsmanship and styling we estimate this is from the early 1900s. Based on the hat and outfit of the man driving the mule, it appears to be New World in origin.
