RARE! William Howard Taft served one term as President of the United States from 1909-1913. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1921 and served until his death in 1930. In between he wrote the preface to this book for the National Geographic Society.

"I have been deeply interested in the development of Washington ever since as Solicitor General I looked out of the windows of the clerk's office at the Supreme Court, at the Capitaol, and stood awestruck by the beauty of that sweep from the Capitol down to the Monument, thence to the shiny bosom of the Potomac beyond, and across the Arlington Hills."

A beautiful celebration of Washington DC filled with fold-out maps and colorized and black & white photography of the capital's most important landmarks in the early part of the 20th century.

A great gift for anyone who loves the city and what it stands for, or for anyone interested in the history of the U.S. presidency.
