RARE! Women's Yellow Pages: Original Source Book for Women by the Boston Women's Collective, Inc., 1973 | Women's Equality Movement
A RARE and EXTRAORDINARY FIND! The Women's Yellow Pages was produced by the progressive Boston Women's Collective in 1974 as a sourcebook for the specific needs of women in critical areas of health care, marriage, parenting, education, and employment. At the time, "Women's Liberation Movement" was making strides to raise awareness of the inequalities women faced in day to day life. The Boston Women's Collective used this publication to address what had always been delicate and sensitive women's issues head on. The introduction explains...
"During the past year we, the Boston Women's Collective, Inc., have compiled a second annual edition of Women's Yellow Pages. Our researchers made us increasingly aware that women in situations of distress unique to their own role have limited avenues to turn to for help. Most sources of help are scattered and difficult to locate. It is difficult for male-dominated service agencies to understand the dynamics of situations they have never experienced. For example, men rarely assume responsibility for birth control or for finding child care facilities. Men never have to face the medical, psychological, or legal implications of being a vicim of rape. And no man has suffered the sense of desperation and isolation that a woman experiences when she discovers she is pregnant and not in a position to care for a child. In any of these situations, a woman should be able to obtain help from a source that is designed to serve her needs. Furthermore, even in those problems that are not unique to women (e.g. extending one's education or finding a job), women have not been treated as seriously as men.
There is often a feeling of loneliness and personal inadequacy among women when they are isolated from other women trying to resolve the same conflicts and problems. The response to the Women's Yellow Pages is evidence that there exists a community of women seeking information that will help them define their needs and actively seek ways to meet them. With the publication of the second edition, we continue to see the Women's Yellow Pages as a vehicle for putting women in contact with the people, organizations, and agencies who can help them meet their needs, both in crisis and in daily living. The philosophy behind the Women's Yellow Pages remains the same as in the first edition. It is our hope that this publication bridges the gap between human need and the lack of institutional responsibility."
The book offers serious, straightforward information and advice for women in the Boston/New England area regarding... Children, Education, Employment, Food & Nutrition, Health (including a new section added on abortion following the 1973 Roe decision), Aging & Agelessness, Law & Women, Media, Money, Self-Defense, Welfare, and Women's Groups.
An essential artifact of the 1970s women's movement for anyone interested in the history of Women's Studies and Human Rights.
