The Frog Prince -Kids Room Art - 1945 Grimms' Fairy Tales - Page Illustration by Fritz Kredel - Custom 8" x 10" Mat - Sold UNFRAMED
When I was a little girl, my aunt gave me a book of Grimms' Fairy Tales. It had been given by my grandparents to my aunt in 1947 and passed down to other siblings (there were 5) and finally came to me. It was much loved by all of the children in the 60 years of readership. I went to pass it down to my daughter and realized that it's time for a new copy. The binding has fallen apart and the pages are coming loose. Luckily, some of the gorgeous illustrations are still in good condition, so I've decided to add them to our Trove Art collection. Trove Art = found art repurposed with custom matting to fit standard size frames.
This illustration comes from the story The Frog Prince. The original Grimms' tales are not always what we are used to seeing these days. In this story, a princess is playing by a pond with a golden ball. The ball slips through her hands and into the pond and she begins to cry. A frog pops out of the water and offers to help her get the ball if only she will love him and have him for a companion. She agrees (but secretly doesn't plan to follow through). The frog shows up at her door and, when the king hears the story, he insists that his daughter honor her promise. She does so reluctantly and eventually ends up throwing the frog onto her bed in rage and disgust - he turns into a prince and they marry and presumably live happily ever after. Interestingly, as they drive off to introduce her to his parents, his loyal servant is so happy to see him that the the 3 bands he had worn on his heart to keep it from breaking in his master's absence, broke off in his joy.
If you have a chance, read the original Grimms' the stories are so different from the versions we are bombarded with today - it's worth the read.
This is a page from that original book - the illustrations aren't on numbered pages, but it was between page 88 and 89. We've cut a custom acid free mat in a purplish grey with white inner mat and acid free backboard.
Beware when you are buying vintage art online - much of it is digital photos of art reprinted for sale. This is an actual book page and not a reproduction - the paper has the distinctive look that you can only get from the real thing.
